JHL (17.03.2017 - Heikki Jokinen) Päivi Niemi-Laine is willing to continue as JHL President. A group of JHL activists asked her to put herself forward as a candidate and she responded affirmatively.

The activists who asked Niemi-Laine to stay on greatly appreciate her, especially for her work in revitalising the work of the union, engagement in societal affairs and her courage to act even when faced with difficult issues.

The election will take place at the JHL Union Council meeting in Helsinki 5.–7.6.2017. The direct member ballot for the 120 members of the Council is taking place throughout March. The results will be announced on March 30.

In June the new Union Council will elect the Union President, the two Chief Executive Officers and the Executive Committee for the next five years.

Niemi-Laine has been President of JHL, the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors since June 2016. At that time she replaced Jarkko Eloranta, who was elected President of SAK, the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions in the middle of his term at JHL.

Päivi Niemi-Laine has been working at JHL since 2009. From 2012 until June 2016 she was JHL Vice President and Chief Executive Officer.

JHL is a trade union for people working in the public services and private welfare services sectors. At the beginning of this year it had 213,222 members, 143,192 of whom are women.
